Northeast folk medicine research gets a Rs 53 crore boost

Union Minister of Ayush, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday laid the foundation stones for capacity expansion at the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR) at Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, incurring a total investment of ₹53 crores.

“The investment to build additional infrastructure at NEIAFMR will act as a catalyst to strengthen research and development in Ayurveda and folk medicine from the region. Also, a new center on Sowa Rigpa will be set up in Arunachal Pradesh soon,” Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pema Khandu, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, said, “The institute capacity being expanded will not only help the traditional medicine, but also comes as an opportunity to document the age-old folk medicine in a scientific manner for wider application in patient care.”

India’s traditional medicine has proven its effectiveness in treating various ailments and enabling a better life experience. The region’s rich variety of medicinal plants holds great potential and unlocks new commercial avenues for the region, Mr Pema Khandu added.

The NEIAFMR is a leading institute of India that has been working towards reviving the Northeast folk medicine. The Institute has been working as a common ground for traditional healers, Ayurvedic researchers, as well as a scientific community to scientifically prove and validate the efficacy of traditional medicine towards the enrichment of human lives.

The capacity expansion at the institute includes an academic building, hostels for boys and girls students, staff quarters, as well as a director’s bungalow.
